Enclosed within the walls was a teeming town of merchants, craftsmen, sailors, the air full of languages from France, the Low Countries, Spain and Italy. Wool poured out through the port, and luxuries goods poured in.  But it was also a time of disease and the Black Death entered England through the port of Southampton.

​Southampton’s Old Town Walls are as magnificent of those of York and Chester, this walk follows the line of the walls visiting towers, gates, vaults and the castle remains of the King of England. This is a story of both England and France, a time of war when Southampton was on the front line.  It can be walked in 80 minutes, we think you will want to linger longer.

​Many buildings in Southampton were used as gaols or prisons. In fact, Southampton had one of the first municipal prisons in medieval England.  On this well researched guided walk we will look at some of the prison buildings.  We will find out how punishment and justice was administered, and consider if our ancestors were hard bitten rogues and criminals, or just occasionally misunderstood!
